Grant Haffner: Waiting

April 12, 2008 - May 3, 2008

Opening reception April 12, 2008, 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

In Grant Haffner's exhibition 'Waiting', his depictions of the East End of Long Island, NY are deceivingly direct and maintain a subtle balance of bright hue and barren composition. Haffner creates compositions with a bold palette that questions everything it describes. Bright greens are cleverly balanced with hints of red and orange depicting the roadside grasses, which in turn frame the speeding pink, blue, red and yellow strokes that describe the usually banal arc of road pavement. He recharges the inherently horizontal East End landscape by carefully framing the vertical powerlines so that they playfully thread through the wide open skies. The poles and powerlines are skillfully utilized to show perspective and exaggerate the depth of field in the fleeting landscape.
